During the recent Fujifilm Inkjet Tech Summit held at the Fujifilm Technology Center in Chicago, InfoTrends group director Jim Hamilton delivered a bullish assessment of the growth of inkjet in commercial production print and how it has already surpassed toner as the #1 digital printing option.
“InfoTrends estimates that in 2014 more production print revenue was produced on inkjet than on toner-based printing systems. Looking forward, we see inkjet printing growing at nearly 3X the rate of toner-based production printing.” — Jim Hamilton, InfoTrends
Hamilton reported several key factors are driving the growth in inkjet as the preferred choice for commercial printers:
- Inkjet Versatility – Inkjet has continued to grow as breakthroughs in printing speed and other production technologies have taken share from toner in many high end application segments.
- Inkjet Quality – High quality applications like brochures, catalogs and magazines will drive the high-speed color inkjet growth in between now and 2019, with an expected compounded annual growth rate of 53%. The rise of production B2 cut sheet inkjet presses like the J Press 720S is delivering offset quality work today.
- Larger B2 Format Size Presses – Not only do the larger format inkjet presses like J Press expand digital print applications to print 3 and 4-panel brochures, pocket folders, posters, POP graphics, signage, wrap-around book covers, newspaper formats, and even folding cartons; it enables multi-up impositions to drive productivity.
- Complementary Solution for Offset Printers- Also driving the adoption of inkjet is how it competes more effectively with offset in delivering the litho-quality printing results they’re used to for jobs not ideally suited for offset printing. Short run and jobs involving variable data can now be printed at extremely high quality with quicker turnarounds and better overall profitability.
“The commercial printers attending our Summit were impressed by Jim Hamilton’s indepth industry assessment as well as how our J Press 720S press demonstration reinforced the many advantages inkjet now brings to commercial production printing.” — Ed Pierce, Product Marketing Manager, Fujifilm Graphic Systems Division
